Asphalt Xtreme is an exciting mobile racing game with hundreds of unique vehicles, stunts, events, and tracks.

Within the last decade, Gameloft has released over 10 titles in the Asphalt series. While some of the original games were known for being a bit bland, Asphalt Xtreme has picked up the slack. This exciting new mobile racing game can be played on all major devices and operating systems as long as you have an active internet connection. It utilizes many of the unique features of modern smartphones including gyrometers, inclinometers, and multi-touch screens.

Just like the previous Asphalt titles, the goal of Asphalt Xtreme is to outrun your opponents without touching other vehicles or nearby objects. Every time that you touch an object, it will set you back a few precious seconds. The primary game mode is an ongoing career series broken down into rookie, amateur, semi-pro, pro, and master circuits. All of these series utilize the same vehicles and tracks, but the obstacles and AI players become more difficult as time goes on.

The controls and customization options are much more expansive in Asphalt Xtreme. In addition to controlling your vehicle by touching the screen, you can also turn and brake by moving your smartphone or tablet. Players are able to tilt their devices to make sharp turns or hit the brakes as needed. Just as with the last few titles, you can also tweak the acceleration settings so that the AI controls your acceleration some of the time or all of the time. Another major update to this series is the ability to tweak the graphics. Those who have older phones can lower the resolution of the tracks or alter the angle of the camera to see more on the screen. Many of the graphical settings will also impact the battery consumption of this app.

As you progress through the series or win races against friends, you are awarded digital cash that you can use to buy upgrades and new vehicles. Those who want to go straight to competitive play can invest actual money into the game to upgrade to better vehicles right away. This “freemium” concept can be aggravating if you want to enjoy neck-and-neck races with friends, and that will turn many people off. Luckily, players can’t use real cash to get an advantage over those who don't invest money into the game. Boosting your vehicle with real cash will only move you up to a better bracket with other similar vehicles.

Anyone who enjoys mobile racing games should find it easy to get lost in Asphalt Xtreme. While this title doesn’t bring any staggering new features to the genre, it is a solid game that only suffers from a few minor mechanical issues. The eye-catching graphics, customization options, online gameplay, and competitive race series all give this game plenty of replayability.
